Tasting Notes: Generous with a great structure; Barbera - the true expression of Piemonte! A wine with style. Instead of the cooked jammy style, this wine has a nose of intense ripe damson, smoke and spices with a sweet silky palate including notes of cherry and a tang of savoury. Generous, with a great structure.

Producer Details: This exceptional estate in the Monferrato hills was bought by Araldica in 1999. After 15 years of replanting, 60 hectares of the 102 have now been reclaimed and are in full production. The warmer, southwest facing slopes are used to grow Barbera, Merlot and Cabernet while those facing northeast give fresher growing conditions, ideal for aromatic varietals such as Brachetto and Moscato as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The 'Il Cascinone' range is produced with grapes sourced from Araldica’s most prized vineyards, both on the estate itself and from other selected sites. Il Cascinone aim to make expressive, yet uncomplicated wines from good quality grapes. Attention to detail ensures the production of good quality wines.

In The Vineyard: The Barbera grapes are sourced from 6 ha of vines on south east and west facing slopes, on the estate of Il Casinone in the Monferrato hills of Piemonte. While these grapes were planted in 2000, other grapes from younger vines are also included in the blend. Barbera is the most important grape in the region, producing distinctive wines.

In The Winery: The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barriques, of which only 10-15% is new oak.

Not being a red wine lover I tried this and a few others on a trip to Italy and now I'm converted. This one has got real taste with several interesting layers, I had it with a meaty pizza, went down really well.
